What is an Allergist?

This a physician who is specifically trained, skilled, and experienced in the diagnosis, and therapy for allergic diseases including allergic rhinitis, asthma and immune diseases. These may include seasonal nasal symptoms, hives, asthma, immune disorders and skin allergies. It also includes the care of like threatening allergies to insects, medications, latex and other allergens.

Specialty Training

An allergist must complete several years of intensive study and training. This includes four years of medical school, three years of residency in adult or pediatric medical care and an additional two years of specialty work in allergy and immunology. This totals 9 years of training following college.

Board Certification

A board certified allergist is one who has completed all the training requirements and must first be certified in either internal medicine or pediatrics and following fellowship and two years of practice must be certified by the American Board of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology. This is a full day examination on all topics related to the practice of allergy including anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, pathology and the diagnosis and treatment of allergic, asthmatic, immunologic and related disorders.

Continuing Medical Education

In any medical specialty and especially one that changes and evolves as rapidly as allergic disease, continuing medical education is essential and required to keep certification. Many hours of study every year are spent studying medical journals, and attending educational meetings. Membership in the specialty groups helps the doctor keep up with the constant changes and advances in the specially.
